Read this short article about setting goals in table tennis

Goal setting is very important in life, school, work, athletics, and many other areas of life.  If you want to train in table tennis with excellent focus and you want to perform well in competition, I would recommend writing out a long-term goal.  Long term generally means 2-10 years from now.  After you have written it out, hang it in your training room for a daily reminder.

The next step is to set out a plan to reach your ultimate goal.  Set out a medium term goal of 1 year from now.  Let me illustrate…   Say to yourself, if I want to become the Michigan state men’s singles champion 4 years from now, I will need to start training hard this year and be able to win the under 1800 Michigan title.  Next set short term goals for the next month.

In order to maximize your performance to reach these short term, medium term, and long term goals, you will need a good training routine which consists of the following – basic strokes and footwork, regular match play against a variety of styles, physical conditioning, detailed video analysis, serve and serve return practice, coaching from a competent instructor, and tournaments on a regular basis.  Write out a weekly training routine and be willing to adjust your schedule from tournament to tournament based on your needs.
