John 1:17
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
In the Bible, when it talks about "the law" it refering to God's law, or God's standard of right and wrong. God's moral law was summarized in the 10 commandments given to Moses on Mr. Sinai. God's standard clearly showed the people of that God that they had sinned against God. However, there was no salvation in just being "good" because they already had sinned. God's grace came through Jesus Christ.
If we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that we haven't always obeyed God and loved God. You and I and the entire world have broken God's standard, we have sinned against God. This is the purpose that God sent Jesus to earth to pay the price that we deserved to pay. We deserved to be punished and He was punished for us.
What does He want us to do?
God wants us to believe. God wants us to stop looking to our good deed to be saved. God wants us to repent from our many sins, flee from our sins, and trust in Christ to remove our sin. Trust that the death of Christ was sufficient to pay for your sins and believe in Jesus as your Savior.
