By Coach Carl Hardin

Coach Carl Hardin is both a table tennis coach and a top-level bowling coach.  This week, we had a brief conversation on the phone.  At the end of the talk, I asked him to summarize what he was explaining in article form so that you could see the difference.  If you have ever come to one of my classes, you will understand that Coach Carl Hardin's approach has had a huge impact on my coaching.

Forehand Mechanics

By Coach Carl Hardin

Your table tennis Mechanics of the arm-swing with a quiet shoulder is the secret of controlling blade angle to eliminate unforced errors.

Your upper arm is attached to the shoulder in a round socket, therefore it is impossible to (swing straight) back or forward; when you swing your elbow to shoulder (upper arm) forward your blade angle will automatically open the blade (in proportion to length of the upper arm  travels forward to and through the ball contact. This is the exact opposite of what's best.

Mental Strategies - Part 19

There are 3 things that you can control

Here are some of the attacks against your commitments; pressure thoughts about needing to win or fearing to lose, awareness of others’ expectations, other competitors’ gamesmanship, injuries, nets and edges, poor lighting and slick floors. None of the issues would matter as much to you if you weren’t striving to be something greater. However the higher your table tennis game elevates, the greater the potential for distractions that can suck the commitment right out of you like a mental game undertow.

Things to think about...

By Coach Carl Hardin

In match competition, trust your training and let yourself play to win.
When receiving a serve or a stroked table tennis ball.
•        Your contact point on the ball is determined by your opponent’s direction of swing, blade angle and the point their blade departs from the ball.
•        Decide and visualize the point of the TT ball that you need to contact in order to stop, continue or change the spin to gain control of the point..
