The Good News of Jesus Christ - Part 9

Read some of my Christmas reflections...

As I reflect on Christmas, I think back 2000 years ago to Jesus, who was born humbly in Bethlehem.  Before the birth of Jesus, there were over 100 prophecies in the Old Testament telling about his coming.  All of these prophecies were 100% fulfilled in Jesus.  Below, I would like to share with you some Old Testament prophecies that told about the coming messiah and share with you some New Testament Bible passages on how Jesus was the fulfillment of those prophecies.

PROPHECY
The Messiah will be the Heir to the throne of David.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.  The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this." Isaiah 9:7.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham."  Matthew 1:1.

PROPHECY
The Messiah will be born in Bethlehem.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." Micah 5:2.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem." Matthew 2:1.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would be born of a virgin.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:  The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendent of David.  The virgin's name was Mary.  The angel said to her, 'You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus." Luke 1:25-26,30-31.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would enter Jerusalem in triumph riding on a donkey.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!  Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!  See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." Zechariah 9:9.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them and Jesus sat on them.  A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.  The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hosanna in the highest!" Matthew 21:7-9.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would be rejected by His own people, the Jews.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.  Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not." Isaiah 53:3.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him." John 1:11.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would be betrayed by a friend with whom He broke bread.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me."  Psalms 41:9.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.  While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, 'I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me - one who is eating with me.' While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples" Mark 14:17-18, 22.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"I told them, 'If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.'  So they paid me thirty pieces of silver."
Zechariah 11:12.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"Then one of the Twelve - the one called Judas Iscariot - went to the chief priests and asked, 'What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?'  So they counted out for him thirty silver coins." Matthew 26:14-15.

PROPHECY
The 30 pieces of silver would be returned to the potter's field.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"And the Lord said to me, 'Throw it to the potter - the handsome price at which they priced me!  So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord to the potter." Zechariah 11:13.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders.  So Judas threw the money into the temple and left.  The chief priests picked up the coins and said, 'It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.'  So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners." Matthew 27:3,5,6-7.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would be accused by false witnesses.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence."
Psalms 27:12.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.  But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward." Matthew 26:59-60.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would be silent before His accusers.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;  he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth." Isaiah 53:7.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.  Then Pilate asked him, 'Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?'  But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge - to the great amazement of the governor." Matthew 27:12-14.
PROPHECY
The Messiah's hands and feet would be pierced.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and feet." Psalms 22:16.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'  They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.  He said to them, 'Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?  Look at my hands and my feet.  It is I myself!  Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." Luke 24:36-39.

PROPHECY
The Messiah would die with criminals.

OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY
"Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors.  For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." Isaiah 53:12.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left." Matthew 27:38.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, 'You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself!  Come down from the cross if you are the Son of God!"  In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 'He trusts in God.  Let God rescue him now if he wants him" Matthew 27:39-40,41,43.

"He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth." Isaiah 53:9.

NEW TESTAMENT FULFILLMENT
"As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.  Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.  Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock.  He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away." Matthew 27:57-60.
