Psalm 51:15-17
Oh Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it: you do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart – these, Oh God, You will not despise.
Most of the time, we think of a “broken heart” as a bad thing. However, in this Bible passage, a broken heart is a good thing. We are born with sinful hearts that are rebellious toward God. We want to do things our own way; we have a desire to follow our sin. We must come to God repenting of our sins and trusting in Christ to save us. Through this, God can break us and change us and give us new hearts to worship Him properly.
In the Old Testament, the Jews were required to bring sacrifices to God. These were sacrifices that God had commanded. These were external acts of worshipping God. However, the sacrifice that God most desires is an inward sacrifice of ourselves. God wants us to humble ourselves and offer our lives as a sacrifice to Him. Today, pray that God would break you and change you and give you a new heart to worship and serve Him.
