5 Tips

Hi Students,

I really look forward to seeing you succeed this year in reaching your goals.  There are few things that I would recommend that you do...

1. Lesson Notes.  It is vitally important that you take notes based on what you learned during your lesson.  Sometimes, we think that we will remember all the details from a lesson, yet within a day or two, we have forgotten so much.  Let me illustrate...  You meet someone at work for the first time.  He tells you his name is Kirk.  If you don't actively think about it or say it a few times or write it down, you will forget it.  The same applies to your game.

2. Personal Notes.  In addition to the info from the coach, you need to be taking your own personal notes as well.  It has been proven over and over again...  the students that take personal responsibility for their games, think on their own, structure training sessions for themselves, benefit much more from lessons than those students always want to the coach to spoon-feed them info.  So in addition to what the coach is teaching you, actively look to learn more about TT and more about your game from self-reflection.

3. Practice matches and Tournament matches.  Why are matches important? Because they help you vividly see a picture of your game - strengths, weaknesses, game patterns, playing system, etc...  Every time you play a match, it give you more info and you should therefore training differently based on how the match went.

4. Record.  Now I get it.  Many of you don't like to record your training sessions and matches.  However, this is one of the best ways to improve.  Yes, yes you have a picture in your mind's eye as to what you think that you play like.  Yes, the video clip shows differently, but you need to take the time to watch it, observe, and take notes.

5. Combo.  Some people take online lessons from me.  Some take in-person lessons.  The reality is...  you should try to do both.  Online lessons help me to see what you are doing at home with your robot sessions - if I don't see your training at home, it might not be happening or might not be as efficient as possible.  If I only see online lessons, then there will be a few deficiencies in your development.  Even if you live outside of Ohio, try to make it here at least once per month for a few lessons.
