Training

Are you practicing the right things?

In the US, many tt players have limited training partners available.  You must ask yourself the question before each session, “Which drills should I be doing with this particular training partner?”

In Ohio, I get plenty of footwork practice with the robot; I also do plenty of physical training on my own; I also do serve practice at my house; I also do plenty of basic looping, blocking, and pushing.  When I recently went to California, I asked myself this question, “What skills should I be working on each day?  I have about 10 practice partners who are 2500-2600 rated.  What skills I be working on while training with them?”

I chose 3 skills to focus on during the 18 days of practice – serve return, short game, and counterlooping.  By focusing about 80% of my practice sessions on these 3 skills, I was able to make significant progress during that time on those areas.

So now the question comes back to you…   Are you always practicing the appropriate drills?  I’m sure that you have limited practice partners.  To get the most from each session, consider the strengths, weaknesses, limitations, and common patterns that your practice partner can play and make the most from every session.
