Recognition
In table tennis, recognition is very important... regardless if you are a beginner 7-year-old, senior citizen trying to make progress, or Olympic gold medalist. Last year, I was racking my brain trying to figure out a way to feature the beginners at our weekly league. How can I put them in the spotlight for 5 min? How can I feature a 1500-rated play or a 500 rated player can make him the champion for the night?
Thinking... thinking... thinking...
Then I had the idea of a 1-point tournament; starting with the highest and moving to the lowest player. Each player has a similar chance to win. We have now done it for the last 52 weeks. If we do the winner serves, the higher rated players have a slightly higher chance to win. If we do the challenger serves, then lower rated players usually take home the title.
In the future, we plan to design more activities like this to feature all players of all ages and all levels. To feel successful, each player should have his moment of glory at some point. Check out the videos below...
