Here are a few simple rules to improving…
1. Learn It
First, you need to have a clear understanding about your strengths and weaknesses. You must also learn new information about how to improve your technique, how to improve your footwork, how to improve your strategy, and other aspects of your game. The best way to learn it is to get professional coaching – in person or online.
2. Remember It
Next, you must remember it. About 90% of my instruction is forgotten by the end of a 1 hour lesson. This is why I will often record the lesson or remind my students to take notes afterward.
3. Do it
This is a big step in the improvement process. You must be able to perform the skill that you have learned. Practice it in front of the mirror, practice it with the robot, and record yourself practicing it over and over again.
4. Use it
Learning a new skill is wonderful, but the improvement doesn’t come until you can use it in a game. Use it! Even if you lose a couple club matches, it isn’t a big deal. Think long-term and be willing to use it.
5. Keep Using It
After weeks of learning a new skill, remembering it, doing it, and using it in matches, you must continue to practice it and improve upon it.
If you practice in the same way that you have always practiced before, you will probably have the same results that you have always had before. Learn it! Remember it! Do it! Use it! Keep using it!
