Serve Return

Learn it to return it!

Approximately 80% of the club players in the US admit that serve return is the weakest part of their game.  There are so many different types of serves – backhand over the shoulder, backhand under the shoulder, forehand pendulum, forehand reverse pendulum, forehand hook, forehand tomahawk, backhand tomahawk, windshield wiper serves, and a much of serves that have no names.

Identify your nightmare serve.  Next, spend time learning how to SERVE IT YOURSELF.

Once you have a good idea of the basic motion and have a good idea how to vary the spin and a good idea of how to vary the placement and depth, then you will understand how to return it better as well.  Remember, you don’t have to perfect it, and you don’t even need to serve it in matches.  You just need to understand the concepts…  and these are best learned when you are serving it yourself!

There are a few things that you can do to learn it yourself.
1.       Watch youtube videos of professionals serving it (preferably in slow motion)
2.       Do the serve motion in front of a mirror
3.       Try it out at the table using a ball
4.       Video record yourself doing it
5.       Get advice from a pro
6.       Be persistent at practicing it until you have a good understanding of all the possibly variations
